Wtf. Dude, it's just not right, but it's par for the administration. Bush Hands Million-Dollar Public Land to Mining Company for $875.

It's funny to see a Chicago working class Democrat marching in lockstep with Crested Butte celebrity royalty in opposing that molybdenum mine. BTW -- molybdenum is the base ingredient alongside steel in producing aluminum (not just used for rifle barrels and lubricants), and the jobs produced from mining it in Colorado are far better paying than waiting upon the uber rich at ski resorts. But you're being so good at your feel good politcal correctness that you failed to research those points.

Thank you for your comment. It is a well formulated, and thoughtful opinion, despite that fact that you are completely wrong. Speaking to my red state loving friend, in terms that your conservative black heart can understand, In a market based economy, you'd like to see this land which is own by the public sold for a market price that benefits the public. In case you are unaware, this administration is running our government at a record budget deficit. This smacks of the typical cronyism that is so common among this administration. Enron, Haliburton, etc. They have used a 132 year old law, and liberally applied it to suit their purpose...AND there is not even a guarantee that this will produce any jobs! In fact, the Phelps Dodge argued two years ago that to establishing a mine on that land would be fiscally" reckless." Watch the million dollar vacation homes go up on this land! I applaud your hope and faith in trickle down economics, that this business endeavor will create well paying jobs for my working class, despite the fact that this theory is just another way the rich line their pocket. It's corporate welfare for the rich and connected, and not in the interest of the people.

In closing...Why do you hate trees and nature so much.

Good work Jerry. Now you are getting closer to the truth about how the 1870's mining law is being abused throughout the "Blue Counties" of Western Colorado as a means for opening more lands to trophy home development. One of the easiest and cheapest ways to obtain those lands is to purchase unused mining claims, and then pretend that the structures built thereupon are related to the process of mining something. Were you trully interested in maximizing public profits you would want the mining law changed to exclude those abusive utilizations of public lands, which actually serve to remove them semi-permanently from public access. Or charge the developers what the land would acutally fetch ont he local market (Crested Butte in this casewould likely yield a hundred thouasand per acre). Sure we should also charge somewhat higher royalties as well, but either way the forest will continue to be altered.

And as for my personal feelings about forestland in this incredible state, they ought to lock up as much as possible in Wilderness Tracts, limit ski resort growth, and tax the hell out of second home owners from any Blue State.
